Adam Spencer calls time at ABC

Winds up in December after seven years at the helm

With no concrete plans as to what he’ll do after his final show on December 6, Adam Spencer announced this morning that he’d be stepping down from the 702 ABC Breakfast show, citing the need for a change.

“It’s been an absolute thrill, an incredible ride and a privilege to host the 702 Breakfast Show,” the top-rating presenter said.

“You’re always going to miss it when it is gone but now feels right.”

“I’m also going to miss the audience and my colleagues but I’m looking forward to new opportunities, and life outside the ABC including spending more time with family, friends, and other community interests.”

The champion of science and maths has racked up 14 years in total on ABC radio, and has been a regular on TV shows, such as Quantum, The FAT, Good News Week and The Glass House.

In an honest message to listeners this morning, Spencer was open about his reasons for leaving, mentioning the toll taken by 3:20am alarms, and using a sporting metaphor, not wanting to stay “a season too long”. In his typical self-deprecating style, he concluded with a light dig at himself.

“In my dreams, early 2014 sees me kicking back on a beach with Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, Barbara Walters and Ricky Ponting. Needless to say, I’ll be the one carrying the towels.”

Local Content Manager NSW, Andy Henley, acknowledged the huge contribution Adam has made, saying “He is very generous with his time and involvement with the community both on and off the airwaves. He has a mind like a steel trap and he has always been a pleasure to work with.”

“His program has maintained the Top 2 Breakfast spot in Sydney, which is a reflection of his contagious personality and enthusiasm. We will be sad to see Adam leave at the end of the year but 14 years of breakfast shifts with triple j and 702 ABC Sydney is as much as we can expect of anyone. This is an exciting time for Adam and 702 ABC Sydney will miss him as will his audience.” said Andy.
