New ABC774 and Victoria Manager Cath Hurley

Cath Hurley has been appointed the new Local Content Manager of 774 ABC Melbourne and ABC Local Radio Victoria.

Originally from Melbourne, Hurley has more than 25 years broadcast experience with the ABC, beginning as a Rural reporter, and moving into various senior management positions in Local and Rural Radio.

Most recently she has spent the past six years at the helm of 936 ABC Hobart where, as Local Content Manager Tasmania, she significantly reshaped the output on air and online gaining strong audience response, steering the station to further success as ABC Local Radio Metropolitan Station of the Year in 2009. Prior to that Hurley spent five years as Program Director at 702 ABC Sydney whose breakfast program under her guidance for a period of time rated number one in the Nielsen ratings.

Cath Hurley has told radioinfo: “My passion for radio comes from the experiences I’ve had working at ABC in both urban and rural communities across Australia and how they vary from region to region and city to city.

“My involvement in events that have impacted on communities, whether it was managing the coverage of the Beaconsfield Mine Rescue, or the East Coast Fires in Tasmania where ABC Local Radio became the bush telegraph for the local community, makes me truly value how our services connect with listeners.

“I now look forward to working with the Melbourne and Victorian teams and their audiences on building strong existing relationships even further.”

In her role as ABC Local Content Manager Victoria Hurley will manage nine ABC Local Radio stations across the state, including each station’s website and content development activities. Cath will manage and coordinate ABC Local Radio throughout Victoria with editorial responsibility for all locally commissioned and live programming.

Manager Metropolitan Local Radio Jeremy Millar says: “Cath comes with very strong editorial and management credentials. She has a wealth of experience and expertise in the areas that 774 ABC Melbourne and Local Radio Victoria is renowned for such as development of innovative online and on-air content that will resonate with the community. A senior manager at ABC Radio of longstanding, it is her commitment to the role of the radio in the community that gives Cath a natural synergy to the core values of ABC Local.”
